Self Storage: A Convenient Solution or an Expensive Mistake?

Packing Boxes To Move

Self-storage can be a lifesaver when you need temporary space, but it’s all too easy to keep paying for a unit long after you actually need it. If you’re spending money each month on storage for things you haven’t touched in years, it might be time to rethink whether you really need it at all.

Take my friend, for example. She moved out while renovating her home and, instead of taking everything with her, decided to rent a storage unit. After carefully choosing what they could live without for a few months, she and her partner packed up their belongings and locked the door on a ‘medium-sized, not-too-expensive’ unit. That door stayed shut for a whole year! That’s six months after their home was finished.

It took another year before they finally cleared the unit. Their last visit was a mix of emotions—relief that they were done, frustration at having to pay for an extra month, and realisation that they hadn’t even missed most of the things they were storing. After two years and £1,800 spent, they only took one box home. Everything else went to charity or the tip.

The Hidden Cost of Self Storage

If my friend had worked with a professional organiser like me for just six hours, she could have saved £720—simply by decluttering before putting anything into storage. That’s because self-storage isn’t just about the monthly fee; it’s about the cost of keeping things you don’t actually need.

Does this sound familiar? Are you paying for a storage unit just because it feels easier than sorting through everything? Or are you about to rent one and want to make sure you’re only storing what’s necessary? If so, I can help.

How I Help Clients Cut Self-Storage Costs

Recently, I worked with two clients who were each spending over £300 a month on storage. In just a couple of days, we sorted through their units, decluttered what they no longer needed, and helped them finally cancel their expensive contracts. The best part? They each paid less than one month’s rent for my services and even made some money back by selling items on Vinted!

Take Back Control of Your Space (and Your Wallet!)

If you’re stuck paying for storage you no longer need or you want to downsize to a smaller, cheaper unit, I’d love to help. Decluttering is what I do best, and I can guide you through the process so you’re only keeping what truly matters.
